2014 Nissan Versa Note Named in Top 10 Cars for Value in the 2014 Popular Mechanic’s Auto Excellence Awards.

Capture

U.S. auto sales are booming, and the market is brimming with great cars—every segment is full of choices with modern styling and sporty driving dynamics. It’s been an exciting year for car enthusiasts, but it also makes deciding on just 10 winners harder than ever. Our picks range widely in price, size, and utility, but, collectively, they also represent the very best of an industry filled with new life.

Winner of the Value Segment: The 2014 Nissan Versa Note

The last Nissan Versa hatchback was certainly more homely than it was hip. No more. Now known as the Versa Note, this little five-door not only is the coolest of all the Versas but is also one of the slickest designs in the Nissan showroom—at any price. But unlike a hot-blooded GT-R or 370Z, the Versa’s youthful sheet metal hides sensible utility. The exterior dimensions of the Note might suggest economy class, but inside it’s strictly business. Slide into the rear seat and there’s as much airspace between your knees and the front seatback as in a Chevrolet Impala. Go ahead, cross your legs and enjoy the road trip. And all this stylish, comfy living comes incredibly cheap. Okay, this is still an entry-level car. So you might want to splurge on a few options, such as the CVT instead of the five-speed manual transmission. This brings a significant 4-mpg boost to 40-mpg highway, which puts the Note at the top of the subcompact class in fuel economy. That means even more savings after you drive the Note off Nissan of Athens’ lot.

Nissan of Athens Announces 10 Million Tennessee-Built Vehicles with the Start of U.S. Rouge Assembly

nissan 1

Nissan celebrated two major milestones this month with the first U.S.-produced 2014 Nissan Rogue rolling off the line in Smyrna, Tennessee, as the facility’s 10 millionth vehicle.

The Nissan Rogue is the fifth in a streak of five launches of core-volume models in just 15 months. The all-new product blitz that began with the new Nissan Altima now has refreshed more than 75 percent of Nissan showroom volume.

The shift of Rogue production to the United States is part of Nissan’s broader strategy to build where it sells. By 2015, Nissan aims to have 85 percent of its products that are sold in the United States produced in North America.

nissan 2

Nissan’s U.S. manufacturing footprint in Smyrna spans more than three decades and includes a number of iconic Nissan nameplates such as Altima, Pathfinder, Xterra, Frontier and Sentra.

“Momentum continues as we add new products, jobs and investment to our U.S. manufacturing operations,” said Susan Brennan, Nissan’s vice president of manufacturing in Smyrna. “For more than 30 years, the Smyrna plant has been building high-quality vehicles, and today’s milestone serves as further testament to the flexibility, efficiency and talent of our U.S. workforce.”

Demand for the Rogue grew nearly 50 percent from just under 100,000 units in 2010 to 142,000 units in 2012. Calendar-year sales of Rogue through September 2013 totaled 124,669, up 13.6 percent from the prior year. Set to go on sale in November, the totally redesigned 2014 model features a stylish right-sized exterior along with flexible, roomy and inviting interior with optional 3-row/7-passenger seating.

“The consistent sales growth of Rogue has made it one of the superstars of the Nissan lineup since its launch in 2007,” said Fred Diaz, divisional vice president, Sales and Marketing, Service and Parts, Nissan U.S.A.  “Now Nissan’s second-best selling vehicle, we will look to the all-new Rogue to cotinue its momentum and help drive the brand’s sales to the next level.”

Nissan’s Smyrna Plant now employs more than 7,000 people with an annual payroll in excess of $275 million. The plant is home to the award-winning Altima, Maxima, Pathfinder, LEAF and Infiniti QX60, as well as the country’s largest lithium-ion automotive battery plant supporting production of the all-electric, zero-emission Nissan LEAF.

Nissan of Athens would also like to share Nissan’s hiring efforts continue in Tennessee. To learn more about a career with Nissan, interested applicants may visit www.Nissan.Jobs.

Nissan of Athens Reports Wearable Technology Space with the Unveil of the NISMO Watch Concept

capture

Nissan will become the first car manufacturer to create a smartwatch designed specifically for drivers of Nissan NISMO cars. The Nissan NISMO Concept Watch will be the first smartwatch to connect a driver to the car and will provide drivers with real-time biometric data.

The watch, unveiled today ahead of its display at the Frankfurt Motor Show (September 10-22), is Nissan’s first step into wearable technology and epitomizes its “fan first” approach to performance.

The Nissan NISMO Watch will allow drivers to:

  • Monitor the efficiency of their vehicle with average speed and fuel consumption readings
  • Access vehicle telematics and performance data while on track
  • Capture biometric data via a heart rate monitor
  • Connect to the car using a smartphone app via Bluetooth Low Energy
  • Receive tailored car messages from Nissan

Gareth Dunsmore, Marketing Communications General Manager, Nissan in Europe, commented: “Wearable technology is fast becoming the next big thing, and we want to take advantage of this innovative technology to make our NISMO Brand more accessible. On track, Nissan uses the latest biometric training technologies to improve the performance of our Nissan NISMO Athletes, and it is this technology we want to bring to our fans to enhance their driving experience and NISMO ownership.”

Earlier this year, Nissan launched the NISMO Lab – a bespoke, mobile laboratory that features the latest, advanced biometric training tools such as brainwave technology and JukeRide – a cutting-edge performance analysis tool, that captures live biometric and telematics data from the race cars and Nissan NISMO Athletes during races. NISMO’s vision is to take these digital age technologies and make them available to athletes from other disciplines and to Nissan owners through future wearable tech. Three key technologies have already been identified for future development:

  • ECG (Electrocardiogram) to measure the intervals of the      R-R rhythm of the heart and identify early fatigue
  • EEG (Electroencephalogram) Brainwave to monitor the      drivers’ levels of concentration and emotions, and help athletes to get      “In the Zone”
  • Skin Temperature to record core body temperature and      hydration levels

The NISMO Watch will also track and rate the user’s social performance across Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram via Nissan’s proprietary Social Speed software.

The sleek NISMO Watch will be available in three colors – black, white and the flagship black and red. The watch design was inspired by the NISMO ring and is reflected in a seamless, futuristic and ergonomic design.  The simple user interface can be controlled by two buttons and is secured onto the driver’s wrist via a simple snap-fit mechanism.

Even the packaging will have a unique n NISMO identity.

Dunsmore concluded: “We have brought the NISMO experience to life in every aspect of the watch, including its packaging, which will be made using tires and rubber from the racetrack. As NISMO is the performance arm of Nissan, we wanted a way of integrating NISMO’s heritage in racing into this futuristic innovation.”

The NISMO Watch will use a lithium battery and will be charged by micro-USB, with a battery life of over seven days under normal usage conditions.

The test drive at Nissan of Athens

test drive

You’ve already done a big part of the test drive without even leaving Nissan of Athens’ lot. Now it’s time to get the feel of the vehicle in motion.

Unfortunately, the test drive is the perfect opportunity for you to be overwhelmed by a new car, since its likely better in many ways than the car you’re now driving. That’s why it’s important to compare it to other new vehicles in which you’re interested, rather than to your current car alone. The more vehicles you test drive, the better perspective you’ll get on each one of them.

Listen and feel for the things you like, and look carefully for the things on your list that you might not be happy with. New cars have personalities, and it’s important to find one that matches yours. Little things that might seem insignificant now could become major irritants down the road.

If the vehicle is equipped with a navigation system, try it out during the test drive. But do it after you’ve finished your planned route, as the route the system calculates for you will likely be different. Enter in a destination and see how well you’re guided to it. With the best systems, you’ll be able to follow the route simply by listening to the voice directions, with minimal need to look down at the screen.

Here are a few things you should consider during your test drive.

Ride comfort.

Is the ride soft, harsh, or somewhere in-between? Does the suspension isolate you from the road or do you feel every bump and ripple? Some softer suspensions feel comfortable over bumps but tend to be floaty, wallowing up and down a bit after a large bump. Look for a vehicle that feels tight and controlled over bumps, but not harsh.

Sporty cars, including some sedans, typically have a firmer ride, which is a trade-off for their better handling characteristics. This may not be for everyone. Some buyers who have been enchanted by sporty cars have later regretted buying them because of the stiff ride quality that seems to accentuate every little bump in the road. Be sure the vehicle you choose is one you can tolerate for the life of the car.

Acceleration.

How does the engine feel when taking off from a stop? Can you merge safely into freeway traffic?

Acceleration depends primarily on the engine power, but it is also closely linked to the transmission. A great engine coupled with a mediocre transmission will deliver a less-than-stellar performance. Conversely, a smaller engine can perform better in combination with a modern, well-designed transmission.

One of the benefits of a test drive is to see if you like the powertrain you’ve selected. If not, now is the time to change your selection or keep looking. During your test drives, be sure to try quick acceleration from a stop and a rolling merge into fast freeway traffic.

If you come to a steep uphill, note if the transmission downshifts smoothly and how the engine responds. There should be a seamless delivery of power.

Braking.

Do the brakes feel responsive without being too jerky? Braking is an attribute that’s hard to evaluate thoroughly without professional help, but you can do a basic assessment. Feel how the vehicle responds when you depress the brake pedal, both softly and with more force. The braking should be smooth and progressive, and it should be easy to get just the right amount of stopping power without stopping too quickly or not quickly enough. If you are driving a hybrid for the first time, the brakes will likely feel different than those in the car you are used to driving.

Steering and handling. Does the car respond well to quick steering maneuvers? Does it track well when driving straight ahead on the highway or do you need to make small, continual corrections with the steering wheel? Does the car feel relaxed or too darty to be comfortable? And does it stay relatively composed on rough roads?

Since the vehicle’s response to quick steering maneuvers is a key factor in avoiding an accident, it’s important to be comfortable with the way your vehicle responds. It should be easy and controllable to maneuver along the road—not so quick that it feels darty and not so slow that it takes a lot of turning to make a maneuver. You should get good feedback through the steering wheel about what the car is doing on the road; some steering systems feel numb and disconnected from the wheels. Many vehicles have variable power steering, which makes them feel one way on the highway and another at slow speeds, such as when trying to park in a tight space.

An important note: Don’t try to test a vehicle at its handling and braking limits to see how it would respond when you’re trying to avoid an accident. This type of test is better left for a racetrack or designated test site than for a public road. Instead, see Consumer Reports’ accident-avoidance Ratings, available on the model page for each tested vehicle.

Quietness.

During your test drive, turn off the radio and close all the windows so you can hear what is going on, especially at highway speeds. Is the sound of the engine annoying during heavy acceleration or highway cruising? Engine noise has a lot to do with the quality of the engine, but it’s also related to the engine size and configuration. Four-cylinder engines tend to be the noisiest. If it’s too noisy, try driving a V6 version, if available, to see if it’s any better. If any engine sounds coarse and loud under heavy acceleration or at highway speed, it could become more annoying as time goes by. They don’t get quieter with age.

Are there any squeaks or rattles? Is there excessive wind noise? The side mirrors are a major source of wind noise. Better-designed mirrors make almost no noise, while poorly designed ones roar and whistle. You should have little trouble telling which is which during your test drive. Roof rails on SUVs and wagons can also contribute to wind noise.

Can you hear noise from the tires? The high-performance tires on sporty cars and off-road tires on SUVs and pickup trucks tend to create the most tire noise. It can be annoying, but buyers who want those kinds of tires are usually willing to put up with it. The test drive is a good way to find out your tolerance level.

Visibility.

Do you get a good panoramic view of the road ahead? Do the mirrors give you the kind of side and rear view you need? Or do wide pillars or a small rear window restrict your view? When backing up, is the rear visibility good and can you gauge the length of the vehicle?

Visibility can vary greatly, even among similar vehicles. Back-to-back drives will tell you which ones have the best visibility. And don’t forget to check rear visibility when backing up and the size of the rear blind zone. (See our report on the danger of blind zones.)

Driving at night. It’s better to visually inspect a vehicle in daylight. But if you become serious about buying it, you should also try to test drive it at night. That’s the only way you’ll be able to tell how well the headlights perform, how and which switches, gauges, and controls are lighted for nighttime use, and whether there are any annoying reflections in the windshield.

2013 Nissan Altima

If you purchase the 2013 Nissan Altima with a 2.5 liter, four cylinder engine you can expect to get about 38 miles per gallon on the highway and 27 miles per gallon in the city.

If you go with a slightly more powerful version of the 2013 Nissan Altima and go with the 3.5 liter, six cylinder, you can expect to get about 31 miles per gallon fuel efficiency on the highway and 22 miles per gallon in the city.

Leading Athens Nissan Dealer Reports 2013 Nissan Leaf Named ‘Top Safety Pick’ in IIHS Crash Tests

Capture

The LEAF achieved the Institute’s highest rating of “Good” in front, side, rollover and rear crash tests. Nissan LEAF joins Nissan Altima on the list of 2013 Top Safety Picks. Both are available at Nissan of Athens, located in Athens, GA.

Life can be good in a 2013 Nissan Leaf, even when you’re crashing one. The all-electric five-seater from Nissan, which is enjoying surging sales this year, has now received the top safety rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Leaf joined the Nissan Altima on Nissan’s stable on the 2013 Top Safety Picks list (which includes a heap of other vehicles) by getting “good” ratings in front, side, rollover and rear crash tests. Among safety-related goodies in the Leaf are its front and side airbags, sensored seat belts and traction-control systems for EV drivers looking to get squirrely.

Ever since Nissan cut the price of the US version by $6,400, to a base of $28,800, Leaf sales through the first four months of the year more than doubled from a year earlier to 5,476 units.

Nissan of Athens reports Nissan lowers price of seven models for better search results

Nissan lowers price of seven models for better search results

Nissan is cutting prices on seven of its 18 models in the U.S. and at Nissan of Athens, hoping its cars, trucks and SUV’s will show up in more Internet searches by shoppers.

Intent on not eliminating itself from consideration, and adapting to the way consumers research new car purchases, Nissan has announced price discounts now in effect, indefinitely, on seven models: the Altima, Armada, Juke, Maxima, Murano, Rogue and Sentra. It was found that Nissan’s price points fell outside the competitive pool when prospective buyers searched for cars based on maximum price.

The price cuts vary and depend on the equipment spec, but they range from several hundred dollars to thousands of dollars; the MSRP of the Altima drops by $580, the Sentra by $730, the Armada by $4,400. Discounts on the Murano alone range from $1,460 to $2,410. Under orders from CEO Carlos Ghosn the brand is working to raise its US market share to ten percent by 2016, from 7.9 percent currently – which includes Infiniti – and appears to be optimizing its placement every step of the way to do so.

Nissan of Athens Shares Some Tips for Keeping Your Car in Top Shape for a Summer Vacation

family road trip 3

Summer means barbecues, sunshine and vacations. For many families, in the greater Athens area of Georgia, summer also means multiple or extended car trips that could take a toll on the family vehicle.

A few simple maintenance and driving tips before could save you a trip to the mechanic and several hundred dollars with extensive car repairs later. Before you hit the road, spend some time getting your vehicle ready for those blissful summer trips.

1. Check those fluids. Change or check your oil, coolant, brake fluid, clutch fluid and even your windshield washing fluid. A fresh supply of fluids can have a huge impact on your gas mileage and help prevent engine damage.

2. Keep an eye on your tires. Use a gauge to check the tire pressure; you car’s manual should provide specification for ideal PSI for your tires. Check the tread on your tire to be sure you have adequate grip in slick conditions.  Make sure your spare is accessible and you have a jack and extra bolts in your car.

3. Have a mechanic inspect your car to make sure all of your systems are functioning properly, especially your cooling and air conditioning systems. Overheating can be a big problem, especially in hot summer traffic. Ask the mechanic to check your fans and oxygen sensors to avoid overheating.

4. Pack lightly. An overloaded car can decrease gas mileage and make a car run less efficiently. Over packing can also create dangerous road conditions if bag obstruct your mirrors and decrease your visibility.

5. Keep you emergency kit well stocked. A small kit in your glove box or trunk should contain bandages, jumper cables, a flashlight with batteries, water and nonperishable food items.

6. Increase the lifespan and efficiency of you engine with conscious driving. Avoid stop and go driving; if you drive a manual, use shifting to your advantage by maintaining consistent speeds. Utilize your cruise control to increase your fuel economy. Not only will you improve your gas mileage but you’ll also lengthen the life of your engine and brakes.
